Blood of the covenant is thicker than water of the womb.
This tee illustrated in the ornamental, medieval art style celebrates our found families, our friend groups with all their quirks. Speaking to LGBT+ history and marginalised experience, it highlights the joy of finally finding your people in the world.
Found families and community have always resided in the special place among the queer history, as well as the lives of immigrants and other marginalized folks.
Love and care within friendships is so important. We all have a deep need for a community (even a tiny one) with whom you can casually spend time being fully yourself, and knowing you’ll be supported, lifted up and cherished.

I started Slavtober as a personal challenge in 2020, a small project to re-connect with my own heritage .The pieces created during that time have developed and turned into my Slavic Mythology book.
Slavtober has since grown to a small community of creatives coming together each October on the socials to celebrate Slavic and Balkan culture, folklore and creativity.
This mini print series is based on four weekly prompts of Slavtober 2025, with drawings created in pencils and ink, and colours added digitally. Here you will find an essence of Polish and Eastern European folk elements that resonated with me: Forefathers Eve (Dziady), a collection of protective charms (like the motanka doll), mythical water demon Rusalka, and - lastly - a tribute to being a Slavic foodie!

Rusalka is a mysterious water demon of Slavic mythology: living by the lake in the ancient Forest, she is the deadly threat luring in lost wanderers… or so the old legends say. But who really is Rusalka and how did she come to be? Where do her powers come from and what dark secrets might hide in her fragmented memories?
“Rusalka - Whispers of the Forest” is a story exploring identity, belonging and control, set in the world of Slavic mythology. The book received the Broken Frontier Award in the Breakout Talent category (2024) and was nominated as the Best Polish Comic at MFKiG (2024).

The Girl of Moss and Rock is my new bittersweet mini comic! Meet a shy femme giant who embarks on a transformative journey alongside an unlikely companion - a ghost of her grandfather, whose gentle guidance might just help her find new peace.
This self-published zine is quite special to me. The story is a modern folk tale co-created with a group of lovely people during a storytelling workshop I hosted last summer. It was a part of the project “Queering Wales, Connecting People” hosted by the On Your Face Collective.
Our giant’s story came from conversations of of identity, resilience, queer experience, and intergenerational connections. The zine also features guest pages contributed by Hannah Laura and Ron Jargielo.

Slavic folklore passes on stories of various colourful creatures, from mighty gods to tiny spirits. They live in forests and occupy households. They have shape-shifting abilities. They're moody and unpredictable.
The "Slavic Mythology" project started in 2020 with an online series under a graceful name of 'slavtober'. Now, at last, it's a magical art book combining illustrations, symbols and original writing, which will introduce deities and demons of Slavic mythology.
This book introduces 16 folklore creatures (some of them well known, some of them almost forgotten) and is one of few Slavic projects like this in English.

The shortest night of the year was charged with spiritual and sensual meaning. It’s a night of freedom and hopeful lovers. Large bonfires were lit and boys competed to jump over the flames. Water also played an important role as floral wreaths were sent onto the lakes and rivers in hope for one’s lover to find the right wreath and pick it up. People also ventured into the woods in the search of the mythical Fern Flower.
One can’t help to wonder whether Kupala created a unique chance for the queer folks to meet with their lovers freely...

Perun and Veles (Weles) are believed to be two of the most important deities of Slavic mythology. According to the myths, they are rivals whose fight resulted in creation of the world as we know it. However their powers are also complimentary, as Perun reigns the sky and Veles - the underworld.

Marzanna is a curious deity in Slavic folklore - she was once a powerful goddess of nature and winter time, associated with concepts of death and rebirth. Her death at the end of winter is necessary to make space for the spring and the deities who are patrons of this time. The echo of the pagan seasonal celebrations is “drowning of Marzanna” during Spring Equinox, consisting of making garish puppets of Marzanna, parading with them and throwing them into a river. Sometimes the dolls are also set on fire, and there are many folk songs for the occasion. In the past Catholic Church has attempted to stop this custom, but luckily the tradition lives on.
I tied the signs of early blooming nature and the symbolic meaning of the Slavic painted eggs (called pisanki) to the powerful figure which Marzanna once was as a Slavic goddess.

Have you heard of a Slavic "Szeptucha"?
This name - meaning "the whisperer" - is encompassing wise women who practise a combination of prayer and chosen pagan rituals for healing and helping their communities. You’d think that’s the thing of the past but they still live and work in Poland, especially in the Eastern regions like Podlasie.
This dark interpretation was created for the 2021 art series Slavtober.

Kamila's approach was professional, yet warm and engaging, making the entire process incredibly smooth. Beautiful art and very informative! The artist also provided a list of their sources in the introduction (though they're in Polish so I can't track them down myself), which I always appreciate! A lot of Slavic mythology and folklore sources are hard to find where I live, so even though this is a really brief booklet it's a nice item to have on my shelf.
